The Caribbean
Situated some 20 miles off the coast of Venezuela, well outside the hurricane belt, Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, the A-B-C islands, enjoy average annual temperature of 80ºF/28ºC, cooling trade winds and thriving economies. Curaçao and Bonaire are two of the five Netherlands Antilles islands, which together with the island of Aruba and the Netherlands, make up the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The islands’ economies are based on oil refining and storage, off-shore banking, salt reclamation and, in particular, on tourism; with guests coming primarily from the U.S.A., Canada, Europe and South America. These islands boast an ultramodern infrastructure with excellent utility and communication facilities and scheduled air services to many of the world’s major cities. The increasing popularity of the three islands among tourists and the successful effort has caused a steady increase in economic activity.

How it all began
On 20 November 1939, when the electricity was provided, Adrianus Kooijman opened his carpentry shop 'Timmerfabriek A. Kooijman' in a rented warehouse on the ‘Rif’ in Otrobanda, Curaçao. With brand new quality machines from Europe and some small hardware this carpentry proved to be the start of something that would forever be part of Curaçao's history.

In 1954 retail distribution of building supplies was added and 'Timmerfabriek Kooijman' moved to Dominguito. The name was also changed to 'Industrie- en Handelsmaatschappij Kooyman N.V.' or INHAKO.

Then in 1961 another establishment was opened in the neighborhood of Santa Maria as well as one in the Santa Rosa area in 1965. In the same year Ad Kooijman celebrated the opening of Antil on the island of Aruba as well.

Later in 1982 Ad Kooijman became shareholder of General Store on the island of Bonaire and in 1991 all shares belonged to Ad Kooijman.

The move to Aruba and Bonaire followed the success of Kooyman N.V. on Curaçao, culminating in expansion and revenue with take-over of a major competitor CTC/LATRA in 1988.

In 2002 Kooyman Mega Store, now Kooyman Mega Center, opened its doors to the general public. The Mega Store also includes an award winning building materials Drive Thru. The Drive Thru has received the prestigious Innovation Prize for "The innovation with the most impact on the economy".

In 2003 Kooyman Techniek moved to the Kooyman Mega Store and Kooyman Gifts & Garden opened its doors to the general public.

In 2004 re-modellation and renovation were key for bringing the Aruban community a bigger and better Antil, now Kooyman Aruba. Kooyman Mega Center, recently Kooyman Mega Store, was completed by the beautifully and uniquely designed showroom, Kooyman Home Decor. They offer you a world of ideas and possibilities for your kitchen, bathroom and more.
The Project Department moved to Kooyman Home Decor and Restaurant K'nuku opened its doors to the general public in Kooyman Home Decor.

In 2005 the Kooyman Glas & Aluminum department quatation, orders and sales (previously located at the Kaya Kooyman (Dominguito) moved to Kooyman Home Decor.
