Kooyman B.V. is a family business, founded in 1934 by Adrianus Kooijman. His firstborn son, Bastiaan Kooijman, started working in his father’s company in 1968. During seven years, he became acquainted with every aspect of the company and then proceeded to become the managing director in 1975. Along with his brother and sister, Bas Kooijman is shareholder of Kooyman B.V., which has remained a true family business after all these years.The grandchildren of Ad Kooijman are a part of this family business. A few of them hold positions in the company. After being the face of the company for almost forty years, Bas Kooijman withdrew himself from his CEO position in 2007 and is now chairman of the executive board. Herbert van der Woude, former CFO, is now Bas Kooijman’s successor as the company’s general manager.
The main office is located on the island of Curacao, above the Kooyman Mega Centre at Zeelandia. The Mega Centre consists of the Mega store, Home Décor, Kooyman Techniek (mechanics) and Gifts & Garden, all of which belong to the Kooyman Group of Companies.
In Curaçao there are also stores in the areas of Santa Rosa and Santa Maria. Zeelandia is also the location of the distribution centre from where a large part of the merchandise is distributed across the islands. The old Kooyman Building is located on the Kaya Kooyman (Kooyman street), named after the company on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The yard still serves as a storage depot for building materials and the office is used by Fun Miles.
There are two stores and one establishment of Kooyman Techniek (mechanics) in Aruba and one outlet in Bonaire. Since 2007, St. Martin has one Mega Store that has been expanded with a Home Decor department due to its success.
