Kooyman is celebrating his 70 years anniversary this year. A business focusing on building materials and hardware. Antil N.V. was the subsidiary of Kooyman active on the Aruban market.
In 1965 Herman Steenhuizen became employee of Kooyman. He purchased an existing N.V. for the Kooyman Group, namely the 'Antiliaanse Handel Maatschappij' also called Antil N.V. When that was taken care of, he immediately went to work by renting a 400 square meter hangar on the Fergusonstraat 22. Now also known as Avenida Milio Croes. Even before the opening on 1 July 1965, a ship loaded with building materials was sent to Aruba to make sure that stock was sufficient.
In August 1967 Kooyman also took over the building material department of Aruba Trading Company and two additional hangars were rented on the Weststraat. Construction for phase one started in 1968. This included a two-storey building with ample shopping area, a big warehouse and a separate wood depository. This added up to a total of 2072 square meters.
Now almost 45 years later and with further growth and better use of economies of scale as their main focus, The Kooyman Group has centralized several activities at the Kooyman offices in Curaçao. Such activities include purchasing, marketing, human resources, etc. In 2004 re-modellation and renovation were key for bringing the Aruban community a bigger and better Antil, now Kooyman Aruba, with the first store in Dakota and a second store in San Nicolas. By drastically lowering prices and maintaining these prices at net level, introducing a new loyalty program on Aruba, offering a wider assortment of products, Kooyman Aruba not only offers hardware and building materials but also a broad range of other home improvement products.
