Safety
Your home should be a safe place for you and your loved ones. You don't want to have any uninvited guests. There are several security 'tools' which help you to protect your home and your belongings.
Security pin
If you chose not to replace the old door hinges, you can install 3 additional security locks for extra security.
Determine the location of the security locks by holding the head of the screw between the door and the window frame head and then carefully push the door into the groove.
This way, you will mark the location of the lockset holes. In the instruction leaflet of the security lock you can read how big the holes need to be. After the holes have been drilled, you are able to install the security locks and close the door to see whether it closes properly and whether the security lock falls into place.
To safeguard the windows
To safeguard the windows you can replace the old locks by officially approved ones that contain the requirements of the Police hallmark for "Safe Living". (will have to check if this exists on the islands)
Remove the old hinges and fasteners first. Obtain from the D.I.Y. shop (Do It Yourself) hinges equipped with security locks. For the window, you can choose locks with a key or with a push button.
In case of the last, you do not always need a key to unlock the lock. You can also leave the old hinges and place 2 security locks underneath the hinge.
This way you will save a lot of extra work. For extra security you can also place an extra security lock on the window. However, this is your choice.
For the entire assembly follow the descriptions in the manuals enclosed in the package. You can also place security tape on the outside side of the window.
This way the window will be well protected.
To install a door security lock
To install a door security lock, follow the following steps:
Do not purchase a cheap or unknown brand and ensure that a certified lock specialist provides you with information and certificates of the lock. Before you install the new lock, clean it very well and check whether it fits properly in the cupboard.
If this is not the case, enlarge the opening. In order to drill the cylinder holes, you can place a piece of wood inside the cupboard where the key hole will be.
This makes the drilling of holes easier so that the drill cannot move. When you finished drilling the holes, remove the piece wood.
Now place the lock in the door and fastened it with screws for wood. Remove the old lock plate from the door frame and place a stainless steel strike plate in front with a new lock plate across.
Be precise when placing the strike plate. If not, the lock will not close properly.
To install security hinges
To install doors with security hinges you first need to disassemble the old hinges. Take along a hinge to the shop in order to find a matching new one.
A good security hinge comes with a built-in security lock. Purchase one preferably with bearings. This prevents the subsiding and wearing out of the hinge pin.
If the hinge is of similar dimension, place it in the same slot as that of the old hinge. If not, draw the correct distant from the hinge and chop off the wood with a wooden chisel.
Drill at the location where the security lock is, in front of the hinge, a hole with a correct wooden bit.
Now close the door and check whether the security lock easily fits into the hinge.

- Disassemble the existing lock. Cut along the front plate with a Stanley knife. This avoids unnecessary damage to the wood.
- Take your old lock to the shop and purchase a new one that comes closest in size to the old one. When buying a security lock, ensure that it contains the official Police hallmark for "Safe Living". Also check whether the number of ‘stars’ indicates that it is an officially approved lock. (will have to check if this exists on the islands)
