Over the past few years we have seen an increase in energy prices. For many people the energy bill is a huge monthly expense, and thus it can be an important point that one can save on. By being aware of the use of your electric appliances and with your energy consumption, you are able to save
hundreds on your energy bill.
Take measures to save energy
Be conscious of your energy consumption. We often consume energy without our knowledge. There are lots of measures one can take to avoid wastes of energy consumption.
1. Don’t stand by!
In every home there are many appliances that are not being used for quite a while. Appliances such as the TV and video recorder could then be set in their ‘stand-by’ mode. However, the appliances still use up electric power this way. We also call this type of consumption ‘leaking electricity/energy’ or ‘vampire power’. It is therefore better to completely turn-off these appliances.
2. Remove your charger from the socket
Chargers are also big ‘vampire’ power users. As long as they are in a socket they provide electricity to its transformer. It does not matter whether they are attached to a device or not. You therefore need to remove the chargers from their sockets when finished charging.
3. Purchase a multiple electric socket (‘power board’) with a switch
A great way to combat energy waste is to purchase a multiple electric socket with a switch. Lots of these sockets have a built-in lamp. The power usage here can be neglected compared to the total energy savings when using such a switch.
4. Maintenance of electrical equipment
Appliances that are not well maintained become inefficient. This means that they will consume more energy thus resulting in an increase in the energy bill. We therefore recommend to regularly defrost the fridge. Also the coffee makers, water cookers and washing machines lose their efficiency through calcium build-up on their heating elements. This means that it takes longer to heat thus resulting in more energy usage. Therefore, ensure to regularly decalcify your appliances in order to avoid calcium build-up.
5. Pay attention to the electricity meter
In order to keep up with your energy consumption you should regularly check your electricity meter. Most households in Curaçao have a ‘Paga Tinu’ meter installed, where the kilowatt consumption is clearly marked. By regularly checking this meter, you will become aware of the energy consumption of certain appliances. You can for example immediately see the difference in sleeping with an air conditioner at night or with fan.
