Because of a considerable increase in the price of water during the past few years, the monthly water bill has also risen. If you like to save money, economize on your water consumption. We gathered a number of easy-to-follow hints and tips in order not to waste too much of our precious drinking water.

1. Place a perlator (faucet aerator) on your tap
A so-called 'perlator' or ‘faucet aerator' introduces air into to the water stream so that you still feel and get the same water pressure, but the actual volume is reduced. Installing a faucet aerator hardly costs any money, but it helps save lots of water. A faucet aerator placed on a tap in the bathtub is not handy.

2. Fix leaking taps immediately
Leaking taps can cause a waste of water. 10 droplets of water a minute easily results in 5 liters of water consumption a day. Therefore, pay attention to leaking taps and repairs these immediately.

3. Turn off the tap
Many people leave the tap running whilst shaving or brushing their teeth. This clean and expensive drinking water runs unnecessarily into the water pipe. Therefore, turn off the tap while brushing your teeth – a small effort that will eventually saves you a substantial amount of money.

4. Pay attention when washing up
Whilst washing the dishes, lots of drinking water literally goes down the drain. To avoid this unnecessary waste of water, you can wash the dishes in a tub. This causes less water consumption per washing-up. Avoid using too much washing-up liquid as this will require more water to clean.

5. Take a shower
The water consumption when taking a shower compared to taking a bath is far less. When using a normal shower head, the average water consumption is 85 liters. Easily 120 liters is needed when taking a bath, and then add the waste of water when you turn on the tap and actually lie in the bathtub and you will use up and pay more when taking a shower.

6. Save while using the toilet
Each time the toilet is flushed, 10 liters of clean drinking water is used up. After each flush, the water tank refills itself with 10 liters of clean water. In order to reduce the water consumption, you can perform this easy trick – place a plastic bottle filled with water in the water tank. By placing this bottle, less water will be used resulting in a saving of a couple liters of water per flush!
Beside this trick you can also save a lot of water if you do not flush the toilet after each ‘small stop’! This is an easy win, especially when two people go to the bathroom right after one another.

7. Purchase a water-saving shower head
A normal shower head uses up between 11 and 13 liters of water a minute. When installing a water-saving shower head the consumption is reduced to 4.5 liters of water a minute. As a result you can quickly save more than half in your water expenses.

8. Place a rain barrel in the garden
In order to maintain a lovely garden in the tropical climate of the Antilles, you require many liters of water on a daily basis. To plants, it does not matter whether they receive fresh drinking water from a tap or elsewhere – all that matters is that they get water! By using ‘recycled’ water, you are already able to economize on your water consumption.
A great way to collect lots of rain water is by placing a rain barrel in the garden that is connected to the roof-gutters. As a result the water supply is increased and the garden and plants receive water freely.

9. Water the plants either in the mornings or in the evenings
Water quickly evaporates under the strong and hot Antillean sun. By watering the plants either in the mornings or in the evenings, you limit the evaporation process and save in your water expenses.

10. Water the plants
It is not necessary to fully water the plants. Aim directly towards the roots with your watering can. The sprinkler is then only needed for the lawn.
