Working with Colors
It's often easy to like and dislike things on others, but when it comes to your own home, choosing the right colours can be a difficult task. What colour suits you? What colours make you feel at home?
Not all colours are suitable for your interior. Even when you're excited about a certain colour, e.g.: you like wearing red, that same colour on a wall can be very disappointing. Therefore it's important to create a colour scheme before you start painting.
STEP 1: Collect pretty images
Draw inspiration from magazines about interior design and home decoration. Combine colours and gather images of beautiful furniture, curtains and floors. Make a collage and see what colours stand out. There's a good chance that you'll see the right combination at a single glance.
STEP 2: Remember the space
All spaces are different. One colour will not fit every room. Pay attention to the following:
Is there little or much light?
Is it a cool or warm space?
What is the purpose of the room?
What furniture will be used there? What colour is the furniture?
Are there parts of the space that you want to emphasize or camouflage?
Do you want the space to appear bigger or smaller?
STEP 3: Pick the colours
Have another look at the collage and choose the most appealing colours. Take the collage to Kooyman and look for colour strips in the paint department that match your chosen colours.
STEP 4: Match colours and space
You've chosen a number of colours. Take the colour strips to the space you want to paint and imagine what colour would look best. When choosing the colour, keep in mind the points listed in step two. Try to match the points on the list with the chosen colours. What goes well with the floor and the furniture? What colour makes the room look bigger or smaller? Use our colour advice for this purpose. (For more information: Colour your home)
STEP 5: Draw a floor plan of the space with the chosen colours
It can be handy to draw a floor plan of the space to be sure of what colour you want applied to which space. Indicate clearly what colours you choose for which space. This way you'll know exactly how much paint you need to purchase and, during the actual painting, you'll know exactly what you thought of previously.
