Before you start painting, consider the effect of the color on the space. Ask yourself what the purpose of each room is going to be. Do you want to create an inspiring work place or a relaxing atmosphere for your bedroom?

The following are handy suggestions for a beautiful result.
  • Dark and warm colors make a room appear smaller. Light and cool colours make the space appear bigger.
  • If there’s a lot of natural light in the room you can easily use brighter and darker colours.
  • Match eye-catching colors with white, gray and brown hues. This creates serenity and balance and does the colors justice.
  • Work from dark to light to set up the space in a balanced manner.
  • Use a darker color on the floor, a lighter color for the walls and the lightest color for the ceiling.
  • Consciously choose the type of paint. Matte paint and cement paint soften colors while high-gloss paints make more solid colors.
  • If painting the skirting-boards remember the following: the floor appears bigger when the skirting-boards are painted in the same color as the floor and smaller when painted in the same color as the walls.

Play with space

Are there features of the room you want to accentuate or camouflage?
These are ways to create visual effects:
  • A high space appears lower when dark or warm colors are used.
  • A low ceiling appears higher when the ceiling is white and the walls are hued.
  • A long hallway appears shorter when the rear wall is painted in a dark or warm hue.
  • Give elements you want to camouflage the same color as the surroundings.
  • Give elements you want to accentuate a different colour than the surroundings.
  • When using lighter colors, unevenness will be more noticeable.
