Roofing and gutters for keeping dry through the rain seasons

If you are about to buy new roofing for your home, be prepared to decide between a range of options and features. Most of the models have been developed over the past couple of years increasing durability, ease of installation, lower cost, sustainability, and other features homeowners would want. Each type come with benefits so you need to consider what suits your home best.

A solid roof with good gutters will defend your home against the elements and depending on your budget and needs, there are several roofing types and materials to consider:

Type of roofing materials

Cement roofing sheets

The Corrugated fiber cement roofing sheets are constructed from a reinforced composite material and formed into a wavy silhouette. They provide excellent durability and this makes them ideal for roofing for both industrial properties and residential.

These sheets come in different lengths, from 61cm (2 feet) to 244cm (8 feet) long with a standard width of 92 cm and they can be easily painted in the color of your choice. This Asbestos- free roofing is popular on the market as they are practically maintenance free. Issues that usually affects roofing like moss, algae, rust and rot will not affect this roofing thanks to the breathability of the fibre cement.

Clay roofing tiles

The clay tiles are a durable option for homes in the tropics as they reflect heat. As these tiles are durable but heavy, you would need to evaluate the current roof structure to see if it will be able to carry the weight. Because of the complexity of installing the frame and the tile, it’s recommended to hire a professional for this, but when in stalled they can last up to 75 years.

The downside of installing clay tiles is that they are quite expensive an chipping or breaking from pressure is a quite common concern so single tiles might need to be updated throughout the years.

Corrugated metal roofing sheets

The most common of the metal roofing is the Corrugated metal roofing sheets. These sheets provide great strength and quality, they are lightweight compared to other roofing options and resistant to rot, fireproof and recyclable. They reflect sunlight which makes them a good option for homes located in warmer climates.

There are models available with a plastic-coat, usually made of either a PVC or polyester to improve durability and extend the life expectancy of the sheets.

Asphalt shingles

This type of roofing is a popular material due to its durability, it’s inexpensive and easy to install which also saves on installation costs. The asphalt shingles are made from asphalt, fiberglass and ceramic granules which makes it waterproof and low maintenance.

Bituminous roofing

The bitumen roofing is made from asphalt combined with polymerized rubber or plastic and reinforced with fiberglass to create a rugged and flexible waterproof membrane. Modified bitumen typically comes as rolls that can be installed directly with an adhesive. It can be heat welded, cold-adhered, or in some cases, self-adhered to the roofing.

The benefits with the bitumen roofing is the easy installation, repair and maintenance. It’s durable and flexible which makes it tear resistant, but if in case of a leak it is easy to repair. When properly installed, it provides some of the best waterproofing protection of any roofing material on the market.

Gutters handles the important task of leading the runoff water coming from your roof, away from your hose to proper drainage. By doing so it keeps your home nice and dry and protects windows, doors, sidings, and the buildings foundation from potential water damage.

They come in different materials but the most popular ones these days are the PVC gutters and vinyl gutters. They come in different colors but white and gray is the most common.
