Interior lighting to add ambience and functionality
Interior lighting is often an underestimated part of our homes. Besides having a major impact on the functionality and aesthetics of your home, it also impacts the ambience and your mood! Instead of remodeling your home, first try to tweak or add lighting to your interior spaces and see what effect it has.
When designing your home, one of the most important aspects will be to pick the right lighting for your space. It needs to serve a functional purpose by providing the right amount of light but it should also create the right look as it can have a big influence on the room design!
To assist you in your decisions, we have put together an overview of the different aspect of light and what you should consider when accessorizing your space:
Know the different lighting types
Most designers think of lighting in three main categories:
Ambient lighting, also called general lighting is used to make the space visible. Meaning it’s the main source of lighting in a room and most often it’s form overhead fixtures or recessed lighting. Normally, utilitarian spaces like the kitchen and bathrooms require more ambient lighting than other areas, like dining rooms or hallways.
Task lighting is designed to add light to specific spaces where you need targeted light. These can be a reading lamp for your bedside table or a bathroom vanity light above your bathroom mirror. This lighting is complimentary to the ambient lighting and can either be fixed or adjustable based on your needs.
This indoor lighting is quite self-explanatory; it’s used to accentuate features or add lighting to a certain object or area. Use this kind of lighting to add drama or draw attention to a decorative or architectural focal point.
The different lighting fixture types
Surface lights are visible light fixtures mounted flat against the wall. They are most used in hallways and entryways to add ambience light.
A pendant light fixture is a decorative but also functional light hanging from the ceiling by a cord. They come in many different models and designs and can be a dining room chandelier or a modern foyer light for your hallway.
Recessed lighting is built in so the light fixture is hidden from plain sight and only the light itself is apparent. This kind of light is usually used as an ambient light source like for example potlights.
The track light provides flexible lighting options as the lights on the track itself can be adjusted and pointed to the objects or focal point wanted. They are used as accent lighting and can be suspended from the ceiling or placed on the wall.
Portable lights are like their name, portable that you can be moved and placed where best suited. They can be an added design element for your space but also practical because of their flexibility. There are normally corded but nowadays the battery driven models have become quite popular. They can be used for your bedside table or your “work from home” desk.
The key to a great lighting design is to have a combination of different fixtures, color temperatures, and styles.
The Correlate Color Temperature, or CCT as it’s also called, measures the lights color appearance. There are three different categories, warm neutral and cool. The higher on the scale (measured in Kalvin) you find the light, the bluer the light appears and at the same time, the lower on the scale the light will appear more yellow.
A warm light adds a cozy feeling and is great for bedrooms and living rooms. For kitchens, bathrooms or garages that requires more focus, a natural light is well suited. The cool light is great for spaces where you need an extra attention to detail, such as reading, projects or other hobby areas.
Prioritize energy efficiency
Energy efficiency has become a crucial point to consider when buying any appliance or fixture for your home. Fortunately, this has also become easier and more affordable!
The bulb requirements will be different for individual fixtures but for an energy efficient and customizable experience you should select LED lights when possible. These are long-lasting, durable and you have the possibility to incorporate smart LED bulbs that can be controlled remotely if needed.
What you initially spend on buying the LED bulb, you’ll gain back later in savings! So consider this investment and you will thank us later!
