  • String or fishing line

Step 1: Get your base surface

Pick up a wooden plank or interior door at Kooyman—large enough to fit the size of Christmas tree you want to create.

Step 2: Find the center

Measure the full width of the plank and divide it by two. Mark this point; this will be the center line of your tree.

Step 3: Place the top nail

Hammer the first nail at the very top point of the tree—this nail represents where the tree ends.

Step 4: Set the bottom lift

Hammer two nails at equal height on both the left and right side below the top nail. These two nails determine the width of the tree and where the base of the triangle
begins.

Step 5: Outline the tree

Tie the end of your rope to one of the bottom nails. Run the rope around all three nails (left → top → right → back to start) to create a triangular outline. Cut the rope and tie it securely where you began.

Step 6: Add all outline nails

Along the rope outline, hammer additional nails on both sides. You can space them evenly or place them at matching heights on both sides—this helps the string lights hang more uniformly.

Step 7: Attach all string lights

Start from the lowest nail closest to the outlet side, so the cord can disappear neatly behind the plank. Work your way up toward the top of the tree. If you have extra length, you can run the lights back down.

Step 8: Remove the string

Once all nails are in place and the lights are attached, remove the outline rope from the nails.

Step 9: Light it up

Plug in the string lights and enjoy your handmade DIY String-Light Christmas Tree.

And that’s it, your very own DIY String-Light Christmas Tree!

A stylish, minimalist alternative to a traditional tree, it brings all the festive glow without the mess, needles, or storage stress. You can leave it natural and rustic or decorate it further with ornaments, bows, or greenery to match your holiday style. Most importantly, enjoy the warm ambience it adds to your space and the satisfaction of creating something beautiful with your own hands.
