With an endless variety of prints and textures, adding wallpaper to a room is an easy way to transform the look of your home. But there is more than just the pattern and style to consider when buying wallpaper. The material, how it’s applied, and the level of care needed is just as important in your buying decision!

The different wallpaper materials

Vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl wallpapers are the most durable and used on the market. It has a paper base and a vinyl layer that acts like protection against moisture and humidity. The surface is easy to clean and maintain as you can wipe it off with a damp rug. They come in different thicknesses and structures, and if you walls have imperfections you want to hide, the thicker and heavily structured designs can hide these spots.

Textile wallpaper

The textile wallpapers are usually made from natural fibers like cotton or linen and brings a natural texture and look to your walls. Out of these wallcoverings the grass cloth is the most popular material and the fabric is usually hand woven from natural plant fibers with a paper back.

Nonwoven wallpaper

The nonwoven wallpaper is composed of a combination of vinyl and natural fibre, making it breathable and durable. Because of its natural fibers, it can breathe meaning that moist won’t get trapped or create any mold related issues. And because of its vinyl component, it’s also flexible and very tear resistant.

Paper wallpaper

The paper wallpaper consists of at least one layer of paper where the top layer is usually printed, coated or structured. As they are made of all paper they tear easily, so it’s not an optimal wallcovering for high-traffic areas in your home.

Flocked wallpaper

The flocked wallpaper has a paper or vinyl base and has an added raised pattern texture that has a velour or velvet-like feel to it. These are very elegant and often look more like a fabric and they need to be cleaned very carefully with a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment.

Wallpaper installation and application

When you are about to install your wallpaper, you need to consider the types of matches. There are free, straight and offset matches and it relates to the design of the pattern and how it would need to be hung to match the pattern.

 

The free match are the easiest to install as the strips of paper doesn’t need to be matched against each other. This can bring less paper waste and time for installation.

The straight match matches horizontally, meaning that when installing it the strips needs to be installed next to each other to match.

With an offset match, you would need to match the pattern with certain intervals. This could be quite time consuming, and it's wise to match the strips before hanging. Normally it’s mentioned on the roll with what interval the print is repeated and how much offset it has in centimeters.  

To ensure a consistent finish on the color and pattern it’s recommended to buy rolls with the same batch number as the finish can be impacted by heat changes and when renewing the ink patronne when printing.

 

There are three main ways of installing: paste the paper, paste the wall and ready pasted.

The paste the paper application is the traditional method where you apply the paste to the wallpaper before installing it. This gives the strips time to soak and to later stick to the wall properly. It’s slightly more time consuming and you would need to follow the instructions provided for a successful result.

The paste the wall option is the easiest option as you would paste the wall and take the paper straight from the roll and apply it to the wall. It’s a quick method where there is no need for soaking or waiting for it to be ready.

The last option is the ready pasted option, these are already come with the adhesive applied to the wallpaper. The only thing needing to be one is to soak it in water to activate the adhesive and it’s ready to be hung.

You also have peel and stick wallpaper or wall decals/wall stickers where you can just remove the protective film and apply directly to the wall. They are easily removable and you can update your wall art regularly!
