The two different types of laminate flooring
Yes, there are two types of laminate flooring, you have the engineered Laminated Wood type that has a top layer of thin hardwood, coated with acrylic and the plastic laminate is 100% artificial with a woodprint as top layer.
With engineered wood you get a better wood look, but you pay almost double for it! The top layer gets dented and scratched more easily than with 100% synthetic laminate but as it’s real wood, lightly damaged boards can be rejuvenated up to three times through careful refinishing! Because of this you can expect it to last longer than plastic laminate.
Repair and maintenance
The maintenance of laminate flooring is quite simple, no need for waxing on any treatment but to regularly clean it with a slightly damp mop or laminate floor cleaner.
The floorboards are quite sensitive to moisture and can’t handle standing pools of water for a longer time. If the moist seeps into the seams between the boards, the floor can swell and create issues and inconsistencies. For rooms with heavy moisture exposure, other more water resistant flooring is recommended.
The wear layer on the laminate flooring protects and makes it somewhat resistant to scratches and dents. But if the flooring is heavily worn or dented, it can’t be properly sanded or refinished like real hardwood flooring. It must be replaced, which is one of the downsides to the laminate floorboards.
Grain design
Laminate flooring can easily imitate the appearance of natural wood, including its grain, color, and texture. Unlike hardwood, which often has many imperfections, laminate floorboards are usually much more consistent in quality and appearance.
