Quality laminate flooring that can replace hardwood flooring

Laminate flooring was introduced on the market year ago as an easy-to-install alternative to the hardwood flooring. Since then, the technology and quality has advanced and todays laminate floors is highly durable with great variations available. Many with an identical look as real hardwood floors. Even thou it doesn’t possess the exact qualities as real hardwood flooring is a durable and economical alternative for your home!

Laminate flooring could be perfect for your home if you want the look of hardwood floors but don’t want to pay the price for it. You can also save on installation as laminate flooring is easy to install yourself! The laminate boards come in different sizes and finishes, and you can decide on a thicker flooring with a grain design to get as close to the wood look as possible.

There are many advantages to laminate flooring and at Kooyman you will find a design to suit your style and aesthetics.

The two different types of laminate flooring

Yes, there are two types of laminate flooring, you have the engineered Laminated Wood type that has a top layer of thin hardwood, coated with acrylic and the plastic laminate is 100% artificial with a woodprint as top layer.

With engineered wood you get a better wood look, but you pay almost double for it! The top layer gets dented and scratched more easily than with 100% synthetic laminate but as it’s real wood, lightly damaged boards can be rejuvenated up to three times through careful refinishing!  Because of this you can expect it to last longer than plastic laminate.

Repair and maintenance

The maintenance of laminate flooring is quite simple, no need for waxing on any treatment but to regularly clean it with a slightly damp mop or laminate floor cleaner.

The floorboards are quite sensitive to moisture and can’t handle standing pools of water for a longer time. If the moist seeps into the seams between the boards, the floor can swell and create issues and inconsistencies. For rooms with heavy moisture exposure, other more water resistant flooring is recommended.

The wear layer on the laminate flooring protects and makes it somewhat resistant to scratches and dents. But if the flooring is heavily worn or dented, it can’t be properly sanded or refinished like real hardwood flooring. It must be replaced, which is one of the downsides to the laminate floorboards.

Grain design

Laminate flooring can easily imitate the appearance of natural wood, including its grain, color, and texture. Unlike hardwood, which often has many imperfections, laminate floorboards are usually much more consistent in quality and appearance. From a distance, flooring designs with a deep embossing can give the illusion of a woodgrain texture, but up close the difference is usually evident.

To make the floorboards as real as possible, the laminate flooring usually comes in 5-10 different pattern designs to mimic real wood with its difference in structure and grains. If you install the flooring correct, you should place the patterns mixed over the flooring area, without having the same designed boards next to each other.

Comfort and convenience

Laminate flooring is installed with a foam underlayer giving it a hard but at the same time springy feeling. With its “click-and-lock” system, laminate floors are easy to install, you can lay your flooring quick and without need of glue. And because of their particle board core, the boards are also easy to cut and fit.

As traditional laminate floors have tendency to be very slippery, newer flooring designs have an added texture to it, as an anti-slip layer.

Compared to hardwood flooring, the laminate floorboards are easy to clean and don’t trap dust, so they are an excellent choice for people suffering with allergies!

Laminate flooring vs Vinyl flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring has many of the same advantages as laminate, easy to install, good performance and durability but it also has excellent water resistance! Unlike laminate flooring that has a particleboard core that can get damage by water sipping in, the vinyl flooring is made of waterproof materials making it resistant to water damages.

Because of this it’s perfect for moisture prone areas like the hallway or kitchen to replace tiles. As its softer and more flexible, the feel of vinyl flooring is quite different from hardwood and could feel too soft for some people.
