Quality Alkyd paint for better durability
The best quality of Alkyd paint is its endurance, it has a high resistance to water and corrosion and when dry, it creates a hard surface that makes it perfect for wear and tear areas. Because of this, the paint is widely popular for use in hallways or in playrooms, but also in kitchens and bathrooms as they are easily wiped down.
Paint consists of three main elements: a thinner, a pigment and a binder. The Alkyd paint uses chemicals as binders and thinners, and is classified as oiled-based. Meaning the qualities differ from water-based paints like the acrylic paint. Even though it’s considered an oil-based paint it actually doesn’t contain any oil but is included in the category because of its solubility.
The difference between Alkyd vs. Acrylic Paint
Knowing the composition of paint will also make you understand the differences between them two better. The three main components are pigment, binder and thinners, and because the binder and thinners are made from chemicals, it’s classified as oil-based paint.
The thinner is the element that determines the performance of the paint, meaning drying time and consistency, and the binder dictates the ability to adhere to particular surfaces. The two paints differ in several aspects and that comes down to their compositions: in latex paint the thinner is water while in Alkyds it’s an alcohol or mineral spirit. The binder is also different as the earlier option uses latex and the other synthetic resins, which gives the later a better adherence and resilience.
The many advantages
Because of the paint’s composition, it has gotten famous for its wear and tear resistance, but also for its high resistance to moist and humidity. Its hard surface is also resistant to stains and can easily be wiped off, having the finish and coat last for much longer.
Because of this, it’s a popular choice for use in kitchens, bathrooms but also in playrooms and for cabinets and furniture as it’s easy to clean and can handle a high amount of wear and tear.
Even thou all paint fades at one point, compared to other paints and specially oil-based paints you will have a better lasting results with an Alkyd, this because it includes polyester.
Because of its versatility, the paint is popular choice for painters, and because of its ability to adhere to different surfaces it can be used on different materials and for different purposes.
And because it dries slowly, you get more time to apply and to make sure you cover all the areas wanted.
When painting around your home, you might not want to use the same paint as earlier. It’s therefore important knowing which paint can be layered and how. The Alkyd paint has a great ability to adhere to surfaces and can even be used on untreated wood.
It’s possible to mix and layer Alkyds with oil-paints as they have similar characteristics, but as the first mentioned have a slighter more flexible film and dries faster, it might crack if you use it to paint over an oil-paint.
If you want to use a latex paint over your current Alkyd layer, you will need a suited primer to have it adhere to the surface because of its smooth and glossy characteristics when dried. But if you want to do it the other way around, it’s possible without a primer needed.
The main disadvantage with Alkyd paints is that they are not as environmental friendly as other paints, and because they use chemical solvents, they emit Volatile Organic Compounds that are toxic and can cause health problems. It’s therefor important that you have proper ventilation while painting or using a proper facemask to not get affected by the fumes.
Because of its thinner character, it splatters easily compared to other paints, and because it’s an oil-paint it’s not as easy to clean up and you would need to use a paint thinner to remover drips and paint from brushes.
Because it dries much slower than other paints, you need to consider the drying time as this can seriously delay the use of the room or surface painted.
