There's no reason why you should have to call a handyman to replace an old or faulty doorknob. With the right tools and know-how, you can replace an interior doorknob yourself.
To replace the knob, you'll need to remove the old doorknob and substitute it with a new one. Follow step by step instructions on how to do this.
- Door handle set with hardware
- Power drill
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Safety glasses (optional)
Step 1: Remove the old doorknob
First remove the screws that hold the doorknob. The screws are located on the inside of the door.
If your door knob has screws on the cover plates, remove them to release the old button. Perhaps there is a small box with a metal piece on the side of the handle. Then use a clip or a key to press the new door button on the metal piece. If this happens, the doorknob would let go.
Step 2: Remove the underlying plate
Pull out the door knob so that the plate underneath it emerges. Then look for a slit in the plate along the seam that comes against the door. Pry with a flat head screwdriver in the slot and give the plate a half turn to release it.
Step 3: Remove the old screws and lock
When step 2 is done and the plate has been removed, you will see the screws that need to be removed with a drill. Also remove the old lock by loosening the screws with a drill or screwdriver.
Step 4: Install the new door handle
Depending on your door, you may need to adjust the distance between the edge of the door and the center of the door knob.
Invert the removal procedure to install the new doorknob. In most cases, the holes for a new doorknob match your existing holes. Be sure to orient the new striker in the correct direction to ensure that the door will close properly.
