A relay is a switch operated by an electromagnet that can open or close any number of switch contacts. A relay can be used to switch a high voltage or a large current with the aid of a relatively small electrical power in the coil of the electromagnet. Relays are used where it is necessary to control a circuit by an independent low-power signal, or where several circuits must be controlled by one signal.
