Loes Praagman, Bonaire
The Artist
Loes Praagman, whose artist name is "Aloha Bonaire", is a dynamic and creative mother of four children who studied decor early in her career. Originally from the Netherlands and now living in Bonaire for 7 years, she was inspired to started painting murals after giving painting workshops. She finds joy in learning about art, people and places.
The Location
For the mural location, Aloha Bonaire and Kooyman chose Jong Bonaire, a foundation for youth work, in Kralendijk. Their mission is to provide programs to young people on Bonaire, helping them learn new skills, find potential career paths and receive guidance from professional youth leaders - all while having fun.
The Mural
When coming up with ideas for the Jong Bonaire mural, Aloha Bonaire asked the question, who inspires young people? "The idea of making a portrait of Luis Moka, a local artist and current ‘Tumba King’, came from a friend of mine. She said 'Luis Moka' and I said yes right away! I love making abstract backgrounds with something realistic. Color is everything!
The Message:
"What I hope for my mural is that people love looking at it, it gives inspiration and makes them feel good. I joined the Colors of the Caribbean project because it’s giving something to society...one of the most beautiful reasons to make a piece of art! "
Kooyman is proud to have Aloha Bonaire as a part of the "Colors of the Caribbean" project, as we celebrate 85 years of serving our island communities.
