Securing your Windows and Doors during Hurricane Season

Hurricane season can bring substantial rain and water and sometimes flooding. While homeowners may focus mainly on roof repair, windows and doors play a major role in protecting your home as well.

Fix Doors and Windows Where Possible
Metal doors or windows along with their frames may need to be repainted to prevent rusting. Wooden doors or windows may swell up if there is a lot of rain and these should be fixed so that they close properly without any issues.

Check for Gaps
Check around all of your windows and doors to make sure there are no gaps. All of the seals of your windows and doors should be watertight. Even the smallest gap can allow water to seep in. After it has rained, check all windows and doors for evidence to know where needs addressing. Silicone is a great and inexpensive option for sealing and can be done in a relatively short time.

Decide What to Use as Protection

Plywood
High winds can cause severe damage to your home, especially areas that are made of glass. Plywood can help to protect these vulnerable areas. The plywood should be an exterior grade and at least half-inch thick. Installed on the exterior, this can help to fortify your doors and windows. Make sure you purchase a size larger than the size of your windows and doors so that the entire area is covered.

Storm Panels
This option will be the highest cost but will offer maximum protection. The galvanized panels available at Kooyman are durable and can be removed and reinstalled as needed. The corrugated design of these panels overlaps. This adds strength and durability, making them extremely resilient.

Sand Bags
If you reside in a flood prone area you may need to find a way to block water out at the bottom of your doors. Sand bags can help with this. Purchase them according to your most vulnerable areas in your home and store them until ready for use.

Hurricane season can be unpredictable, and we advise that you to don’t wait until a storm is here to prepare. Make any refurbishment needed to your doors and windows, purchase and store your preferred door and window coverings, and make sure you know how to install them. Stay safe during this hurricane season.
