Hurricane Tips
Here are our Top 10 Tips to help you be prepared in the event of a Storm or Hurricane.

  1. Do check with your neighbors, seniors, differently able persons or anyone who may need additional help securing their home or safety this Hurricane Season.
  2. Stay on top of car maintenance, make sure your spare tire is in good condition, and keep the gas tank at least half-full in case of unexpected evacuations and full if a hurricane evacuation is possible.
  3. Know how to turn off the utilities in your home in case of an emergency. You may need to shut them off if you have to evacuate or if conditions deteriorate.
  4. Store enough water and nonperishable food items for each family member for at least 3 days. Review how to sanitize your water and have an optional cooking plan.
  5. Check the items in your first aid kit to make sure they haven’t expired and add any additional items you may need depending on your family’s individual needs.
  6. Remove and store or strap down any materials outside of your home. These items can quickly become missiles which can easily damage your or your neighbors home in hurricane force winds.
  7. Talk with your family about what to do if a hurricane strikes. Discussing hurricanes ahead of time helps reduce fear, particularly for younger children.
  8. Protect windows with permanent storm shutters or invest in plywood that is pre-cut to fit your doors and windows.
  9. Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts to prevent flooding and unnecessary pressure on the awnings.
  10. Bring your companion animals indoors and maintain direct control of them. Be sure that your pet emergency kit is ready to go in case of evacuation.
