Power tools accessories for providing great versatility

You can categorize the power tools accessories in three main categories, abrasives, bits and blades. With a great variety and options, these accessories can be used across several power tools, but be sure to buy the right fit for your specific tool.

Power tool abrasives

The cut off wheels are used for metal cutting and grinding, you can find them in different sizes for adjusting to the thickness and the material to be cut.

Abrasive papers are used to sand surfaces or strip away a coat. You can either do it by hand or with a machine and depending on the finish wanted, you can decide between different grit values for the paper:

Grit values up to 100 means a rougher paper and result, 100-180 grit values means a medium sandpaper that can prepare for the finishing touches, which can be done with grit values from 120 and up.

For stone and concrete polishing, polishing pads and wheels can be used. For polishing floors special pads can be used and for the finer polishing, buffing wheels and accessories are used.

You also have the grinder wheels that can be used for metal welding or fabrication.

The wire brush is a versatile tool that can remove tough rust and oxidations but also paint and other coatings from surfaces. Depending on the material of the brush and the thickness of the wire, different models have different purposes and applications.

Power tool drill bits

The qualities and usage of a drill bit is decided based on the material from which it’s made and its finish. Its design can also dictate the purpose, some bits can be used on a range of materials and others only a single one.

There are versatile high-speed steel (HSS) drill bits that can drill in a range of different materials, they come with titanium and black oxide-coat that make them stay sharp longer and resist corrosion. The cobalt drill bits are used to drill in metals as they are extremely hard, only the carbide-tipped drill bits are harder and very effective for drilling in masonry and tiles.

The twist drill bit is a general-purpose bit and is the most used drill bit by DIYer as it can drill in light metal plastic and wood.

The brad-point bit is used for drilling in wood. At the center of the tip it has a brad that help you position it perfectly and the flutes on the sides removes the wood and dust.

The auger bit is an additional type of wood bit that works similar to the brad-point but can be up to 18 inches long.

The self-feed bit is a more compact bit for wood that can be used to drill shorter and wider holes, but also on an angle.

The installer bit is designed for installing wiring and can drill in plaster, wood and even some masonry. You can find them up to 18 inches long and you can use the bit to pull the cable through the hole.

The spade bit, also called flat bit or paddle bit is used to drill larger holes in wood. Its name comes from its shape as it has a flattened blade and a sharp middle point that positions the bit.

The Forstner bit is similar to the self-feed bit and can drill larger and overlapping holes in wood.

But this bit is best suited for use in a drill press as you need both force and control to get clean holes.

The hole saw bit is used for drilling large holes for different installations, like installing wiring, door locks but also other hardware. While drilling it also creates a cut-out that can be used to seal the hole if later needed. You have different types of hole saws and based on the material and teeth profile, it can be used on wood, metal, masonry and tile.

The tile bit is designed to drill sharp holes in tiles without chipping or cracking it.

The masonry bit is a strong bit that is designed to drill in hard materials like brick, concrete and other masonry. Most models should be used with a hammer drill but there are others that can be used with a regular rotary drill.

Circular Saw Blades

Circular saw blades are mostly used to cut wood, but there are models with which you can cut metal and masonry. The saws performance is normally impacted by the blade’s teeth rather than the disk itself. It’s therefore important knowing what type of teeth the blade needs for it to do the right cut.

The finer the cut you are after, the greater number of teeth your blade needs. The fine-toothed blades leave a clean crisp edge on wood but can also be used on aluminum and plastics.

The diamond-edged blade is a strong blade that has diamonds attached to the edge of the blade, making it possible to cut materials like slate and tile.

The abrasive blades come in different versions for cutting in solid materials like concrete and brick but also metal. Instead of using diamonds to pierce the material, it uses an abrasive material, like aluminum oxide.

Straight saw blades

There are several factors and parameters that affects a reciprocating saw and other straight blades usage and application. Like with the circular saw blades, the cutting teeth profile has a major impact on the cutting ability, the more the teeth the finer the cut.

The blades dimension and material composition also play a role for what it’s most suited for, and for specialized applications like cutting in brick and masonry or metal, the blades tip or teeth can have an added layer for strength or even added diamonds.
