Jhomar Loaiza, Curaçao
The Artist
Born in Venezuela and living in Curaçao since 2018, Jhomar is a highly recognized and awarded international artist. He generally uses primary colors, as the Caribbean light intensifies the tones, making him feel free and alive. Some of his other local murals can be seen in Otrobanda and most recently at Sentro Deportivo Kòrsou.
The Location
For the mural location, Jhomar and Kooyman chose Kolegio Bellefaas Martis in Willemstad. Based on a Roman Catholic education, the school's mission is to the benefit of the development of their students by teaching skills and knowledge to function well in all areas, as well as being able to think and act independently.
The Mural
For Jhomar, colors convey sensation. "In this mural titled "Esperanza”, I painted a little girl's innocent gaze looking towards the future, filled with hope for a better world. She is surrounded by flowers and local birds, symbolizing beauty and freedom, while also representing the homeland through its architecture and flag.
The Message:
"The mural is located in a school where the children themselves will see themselves reflected, giving the school a positive impact and visual recreation. For me, the human figure is important because you can create characters, paying homage to them."
Kooyman is proud to have Aloha Bonaire as a part of the "Colors of the Caribbean" project, as we celebrate 85 years of serving our island communities.
