Packing Tips for Your Next Move
January 27, 2025

Ask anyone what the most stressful event was in their life, and chances are, they'll say moving. Packing up everything and relocating somewhere new isn't easy, even if it's just down the road. You're leaving behind so many memories, and it's a whole ordeal to move out of your old place and into the new one.
But moving doesn't necessarily need to be a hair-pulling experience. Below are key packing tips you need to follow for a smoother time.
Start early
Begin packing for your move well in advance of your move date to avoid last-minute stress; give it at least a few weeks before your move date. This allows you to tackle the monumental task gradually in small chunks, which can help you feel less overwhelmed.
Also, in the Caribbean, unexpected weather events like tropical storms or heavy rain can occur. Starting early gives you a buffer in case of any delays caused by weather conditions.

Gather Supplies
Find sturdy boxes that can withstand humidity. Consider using plastic storage bins with secure lids to protect your belongings from moisture. There are moisture-resistant containers and vacuum-sealed bags as well, which are excellent for things like clothing, linens, and other fabric items.
You should invest in high-quality packing tape too. This will ensure that the boxes remain securely sealed, even in humid conditions.
Lastly, use bubble wrap or packing paper to cushion fragile items. And think about using moisture-resistant packing materials to protect them from humidity. For example, you can use desiccant packs or moisture absorbers in the boxes.

Protect Fragile Items
Wrap delicate items individually with bubble wrap or packing paper to provide cushioning and prevent breakage during transit. After wrapping the items, pack them together tightly in boxes to minimize movement.
In addition, label boxes containing fragile items clearly. You should also mark them with an arrow indicating which way is up to make sure people handle the boxes carefully.
Utilize Space Efficiently
Maximize space by filling drawers and other furniture with smaller items, like clothing, accessories, or household goods. Using the same idea, pack items inside larger ones to make the most of available space, but be mindful not to make furniture too heavy. That way, you can still move it safely.
Use vacuum-sealed bags for bulky items like bedding or clothing. This is one of the greatest packing hacks to minimize the amount of space they take up.
Label Moving Boxes Clearly
On that note, use clear and descriptive labels on each box to make unpacking easier. Clearly indicate which room each box belongs to so that your helpers (either your loved ones or professional movers) know where to place them in your new home.
You can even color-code or number boxes for additional organization. This is especially beneficial for those who have a large volume of items to move.

Pack Essentials Separately
Pack a separate bag or box with essential items that you'll need immediate access to upon arrival at your new home. There's nothing worse than feeling exhausted after a long day, only to spend hours of your time and energy rummaging for your much-needed things.
Include toiletries, medications, important documents (such as passports or rental agreements), a change of clothes, and other necessities. Keep this bag with you during the move rather than packing it in a moving truck.
Plan for Perishables
Avoid packing perishable items like food, plants, or open containers of liquid, as they may spoil during transit. Instead, try to use them up before your move date, or consider donating them to neighbors, friends, or local charities.
Make sure you dispose of these belongings responsibly. You don't want to attract pests or cause odors during the move.

Consider hiring professionals
If you're feeling overwhelmed by the logistics of your move, think about hiring professional movers who are experienced with navigating the challenges of moving.
Did you know there are moving packers too? In fact, most companies offer comprehensive services, such as packing, loading, transporting, and unloading your belongings. This will allow you to focus on other aspects of your move with peace of mind.
