Bernica Michel, Sint Maarten
The Artist
Known artistically as "Nica La belle", Bernica was born in Haiti and has lived in Sint Maarten from a young age. She earned her bachelor’s degree in advertising & marketing in the U.S. and combines that knowledge with her passion for art & music,
channeling it into a mission to elevate her community through history & art.
The Location
For the mural location, Nica and Kooyman chose the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex. This is the main sporting facility for the island as well as host to many community events. Because Nica grew up playing sports there, it holds a deep connection. "For me, it’s a place where growth was cultivated and where friendships were formed."
The Mural
"My style is very fluid, flexible and vibrant. For my mural, I chose to use national heroes in the community to enforce pride. My goal is to inspire the community to embrace sports, not as just a game, but a unifying force, encouraging teamwork and perseverance. Color has the power to change moods, thoughts and actions."
The Message:
"I believe art has the power to influence and inspire anyone that lays eyes on it. I hope this mural will make them feel proud of where they’re from especially, when we commemorate national heroes from any field. It gives those coming up something to look forward to."
Kooyman is proud to have Nica La belle as a part of the "Colors of the Caribbean" project, as we celebrate 85 years of serving our island communities.
