Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference?

On-Grid Installation

An On-Grid solar installation is linked to the local energy provider. It optimally utilizes the generated solar energy for immediate consumption and gives the opportunity to provide any excess energy to be supplied back to the local energy provider. In the year 2023, a fee of ANG 0.25 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) is applicable for this surplus energy that is fed back into the grid.

Off-Grid Installation
An Off-Grid solar installation operates independently from the local energy provider. In this setup, the solar energy generated is consumed directly by the system's users, with any surplus energy being stored in batteries for later use.

Hybrid Installation
A Hybrid Solar Installation is connected to the local energy provider. In this configuration, the solar energy generated is initially consumed directly by the system's users, with any excess energy being stored in batteries. When the batteries reach full capacity, any surplus solar energy can be but does have to be supplied back to the local energy provider, with compensation at a rate of ANG 0.25 per kWh. In situations where there is insufficient solar energy, the system seamlessly draws additional power from the local energy provider to meet the energy needs

What type of voltage is required to install Kooyman Solar?

Our system is designed to support various voltage requirements, 127 volts, 220 volts, and combinations of both, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of electrical configurations.

What is the timeline for a positive return on investment (ROI) for a K-Solar installation?

The projected timeline for achieving a positive return on investment (ROI) with a K-Solar installation varies based on the system type:
For an On-Grid connected K-Solar system, the average ROI typically falls between 2 to 3 years.
In the case of an Off-Grid or Hybrid Solar system, the expected ROI timeframe extends to an average of 5 to 7 years.

What is solar tax and what are its costs?

Solar tax is a recurring monthly fee paid to the local energy provider, for the maintenance of the connection to your residential property. This fee is typically integrated into the overall energy pricing structure. However, with the implementation of solar panels, the energy costs are significantly reduced, resulting in a disproportionality between the solar-connected and non-solar-connected connections.
In 2023, the solar tax rates are as follows:
ANG 8 per kilowatt-peak (kWp) for private homes.
ANG 16 per kWp for commercial establishments.
ANG 24 per kWp for business connections.

These rates are applied based on the installed capacity of your solar panel system (kWp) and vary depending on the type of connection (residential, commercial, or business).

Installation and technical aspects

Why should I get a solar installation?
The benefits of solar energy span everything from significant financial savings to reducing your impact on the climate. You will increase your home's value by installing a solar system on your home.

What are the financial benefits of solar energy?
When you install a solar energy system on your property, you save money on your electricity bills and protect yourself against rising electricity rates in the future. How much you can save depends on your utility rate and solar policies, but going solar is a wise investment regardless of where you live.

Can I afford to go solar?
If you can afford to pay your electricity bill, you can afford to go solar. There are 0-down solar financing options, as in a solar (green) loan and, make it easy for homeowners to start saving on their electricity bills by going solar. You can request a finance option with our K-pay officer.

Can I fully disconnect from the local energy supplier?
To completely disconnect from the local energy supplier, and rely solely on your solar installation, it typically requires an Off-Grid or Hybrid solar system, along with sufficient energy storage (batteries). The feasibility of full disconnection can vary depending on factors like your energy consumption, location, and system design.

Is it possible to move my Solar Installation?
Yes, you can relocate your solar installation when you move. However, this process may involve some costs, including disassembling, transporting, and reassembling the system at your new location. It is important to work with a solar installer who can provide guidance and cost estimates for this process.

Can I install solar panels just for my air conditioner?
Yes, you can install solar panels just to power your air conditioner. The number of panels needed will depend on the air conditioner's energy consumption and your solar system's capacity. It's essential to size the system correctly to ensure it can meet the air conditioner's power demands.

Is there a "plug and play" Solar system for air conditioning?
There are "plug and play" solar air conditioning systems available. These systems are designed to be user-friendly and can be integrated with existing air conditioning units.

Do animals cause a lot of damage to solar panels? For example, Iguanas, rats or birds.
Animals like iguanas, rats, and birds can potentially cause damage to solar panels. While solar panels are durable and designed to withstand various environmental factors, it's advisable to take precautions like installing protective mesh or barriers to prevent animals from accessing the panels and causing damage.

Can solar panels be installed on an aluminum roof?
Solar panels can be installed on an aluminum roof. Aluminum is a suitable material for supporting solar panel installations, as it is lightweight and corrosion resistant. Ensure that proper mounting systems are used to securely attach the panels to the roof structure and consult with a professional installer to assess the compatibility of your specific roof type.

Is my installation safe during Storms/Hurricanes?
Solar panel installations are designed to withstand storms and hurricanes. Professionally installed systems are secured to withstand high winds and are designed to be safe during severe weather events. However, it is advisable to consult with a professional installer to ensure your system is adequately secured and to take any additional precautions recommended for your region.

Does Sahara sand affect solar panels?
Sahara sand or dust can accumulate on solar panels, reducing their efficiency temporarily. Regular cleaning can help maintain optimal performance.

Do I need to clean my Solar panels frequently, maintenance?
Solar panels may require occasional cleaning to remove dirt and dust, especially in dusty environments. Routine maintenance checks are also recommended to ensure the system is operating efficiently.

Does Lure offer cleaning services?
Yes, Lure offers a maintenance contract on an annual basis, which includes the cleaning of the solar installation. This can help ensure the optimal performance and longevity of your solar panels.

How should solar panels be cleaned?
Solar panels can be cleaned with a soft brush, mild detergent, and water. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals. Cleaning should be done carefully to prevent damage to the panels.

Will there be a display available in the house to monitor and watch daily usage?
Yes, there will be an app or website available for you to monitor and track the daily usage and status of your solar installation. This provides you with real-time insights into the performance of your system and allows you to make informed decisions regarding your energy usage and efficiency.

What is the lifespan of solar panels, inverters, and batteries?
The lifespan of solar panels is typically 15-25 years. Inverters can last 10-15 years, and batteries may need replacement after 5-15 years, depending on the type and usage and how they were stored.

When is the first service appointment after installation?
The first service appointment after installation may vary by provider but is often scheduled within the first year to check system performance and ensure it's working as expected.

How soon after my payment are the solar panels installed?
The timing for solar panel installation varies but can take several weeks from payment, depending on factors like availability, installation complexity, and available inventory. In general this should be within 5 to 8 weeks.

Can I use solar panels with 'Pagatinu'?
Yes, you can install a solar installation with a 'Pagatinu' meter. However, if you intend to sell excess power back to the local energy provider, you will need to switch back to a standard Aqualectra meter.

Placement and Adjustments

Should a separate room be built to place the installation?
It is important to ensure that the area where batteries and inverters are located is well-ventilated and maintains a suitable temperature, ideally not exceeding 25°C (77°F). Proper ventilation and temperature +control can help optimize the performance and lifespan of these components. Usually, it is not necessary to build a separate room.

Can I change/adjust my installation after a while? Expand or replace?
Solar installations can be expanded or adjusted after installation, depending on the chosen installation. Kindly consult the guidance of a professional installer.

Can you have solar panels if you have a rental property?
