Step 1: Find a pallet

Pallets are usually plenty to spare at your local hardware store, supermarket or furniture store. Make sure the boards are evenly spaced. The best pallets are the higher ones with horizontal planks and as few nails and cracks as possible. You have pallets in all shapes and sizes so the more uniform the pallet and less nails and cracks the easier it is to make your tree. Search for a pallet that is higher and has the planks horizontal.

Step 2: Get into shape

Now that we have the pallet, we are going to draw the tree shape on your pallet. Place a long straight stick or plank across and draw a line as depicted here. Cut it with a circular or hand saw. Make sure you don't cut into the middle base beam! This will hold your tree together.

Step 3: Cut the back and strengthen it

Cut off the back of the pallet and pry off any leftover wood or nails. Some pallets have more and some have less back boards on the back, cut and saw them off accordingly and if the planks are loose make sure you secure them firmly with some extra wood screws.

Step 4: Sand and paint

For a rustic look, sand your wooden tree with a sanding machine and make sure there are no rough edges, use wood oil to give it that nice rustic wooden look, or use wood paint to give it any color you want.

Step 5: Make the stand

While the tree is drying we are going to make a stand for it. To make the stand you can use leftover wood from the back of the pallet. Saw 2 x smaller, 1 x medium and 1 x longer piece. Place the planks in a cross and screw them together. When the tree is dry screw the stand on the bottom and make sure it is really secure. Stain it afterwards!

TIP: Pre-drill all the holes. Pallet wood is old and can split easily when not pre-drilled.
