Hurricane Safety Tips

  • Check with your neighbors, seniors, differently able persons or anyone who may need additional help securing their home or safety
  • Stay on top of car maintenance, check your spare tire and keep the gas tank at least half-full in case of unexpected evacuations  
  • Know how to turn off the utilities in your home in case of an emergency.

  • Store enough water and nonperishable food items for each family member for at least 3 days. Review how to sanitize your water and have an optional cooking plan. ​ 
  • Check the items in your first aid kit to make sure they haven’t expired and add any additional items you may need depending on your family’s individual needs. ​

  • Talk with your family about what to do if a hurricane strikes. Discussing hurricanes ahead of time helps reduce fear, particularly for younger children. ​ 
  • Protect windows with permanent storm shutters or invest in plywood that is pre-cut to fit your doors and windows. 
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts to prevent flooding and unnecessary pressure on the awnings. 
  • Bring your companion animals indoors and maintain direct control of them. Be sure that your pet emergency kit is ready to go in case of evacuation.
